The end. Back at Sheffield station after a traumatic train journey on an overfull train with bike space taken up with luggage . Glad to be back with home comforts now at Phil's house

Hartside cafe, watershed between Irish and north sea. Dark clouds looming and spots of rain but we got away without a soaking. Bloomin cold on the fast run down the side of the hill , even with a jacket on

The start of the climb to hartside

Lots of hillside views today.

At the top of the run out from Newcastle

A fossilised tree stump. Odd

Time for tea before the decent to stanhope

Stopping for a breather just outside consett. Phil pretending he is really important and work can't cope without him

Fyne cycle tunnel. Really good but locals seemed unsure why we were so impressed. Managed to find best place for curry tonight too.

At the end of the first coast to coast. South shields .

A long , straight road from the fort.

Roman fort in the distance . Vindolanda. Would have been impressive in its day. Some steep hills to this point but downhill for miles afterwards. The sun just came outagain too but the clouds look a bit worrying

Birdoswald Roman fort. It had seen better days, but had a nice cafe with cakes. Made very fast progress today despite the hill profiles looking challenging. Hopefully tomorrow is all downhill to Newcastle

C2c planners do seem to have a sense of humour. The sign pointed across here, but there was a bridge a bit further down

Must admit we thought it would be a bit higher than that

B&b was meant to be 3 star but I'm not so sure

Port carlisle. Nice b&b but blame this place is quiet. One road in and out

-- Sent from my HTC Desire on 3 --

Wheel touched into water, which we debated doing for a while, plus I had to do it twice as Phil couldn't see water on my tyre and I couldn't risk having that brought up every 10 mins

Dramatic failure of Phil's luggage rack caused a bit of a sudden stop. Lashed it up with cable ties, not ideal and will have to find a replacement

Sloth. Nice sort of place but a cobbled sea front road. Not very bike friendly.

A downhill bit. Definitely less of these than the uphill bits.

First luxury meal while here. A sandwich from Morrison.

Somewhere between keswick and cockermouth. Took longer than we thought to get here. Just after this we decided to take the route marked with a warning and spent a lot of time trying to get the bikes up some sort of screen slope.
